Phenomena -> Evidence -> Claim
- This is a photo of the trashcan outside the classroom after break/lunch that we took. We noticed that the waste wasn’t organized properly, causing it to produce a bad stench. This evidence proves that the problem of unorganized waste and scattered waste around our school exists.
- This is another picture we took in our observation, which shows one of the classrooms with its lights turned on afterschool, with nobody inside and despite it already being bright enough. This evidence proves that the overuse of unnecessary electricity exists in our school.

Trash/Waste
- The approximately amount of waste that is produced everyday in a classroom is 0.5-1 trashcan which is the amount of 5.67-6.08kg everyday in a classroom of the average students of 25-30.
Electricity
- Through our interview with the staff in our school, we found out that some teachers do turn off the lights before leaving work, while some aren’t turned off, and usually the security turns off the remaining lights off at night.
Claim
Trash/Waste
- Our claim is that the trash phenomenon in our school is mainly caused by improper waste disposal and poor waste management and organizing.
Students often leave or throw trash around the school instead of putting it in the trash cans, while recyclable waste is not always separated properly. The lack of strategically placed trash cans is also one of the main cause of this problem.
- Our claim is that a classroom can produce approximately 0.51 trash can, or 5.67–6.08 kg, of waste per day. That means in a year, a classroom can produce about 2,069.6-2,219.2kg of total waste.
- We can manage the waste by placing trash cans in a convenient location
- About 80% of that waste aren’t recycled back, because of poor waste management. This causes producers and manufactures to require more energy to create a new product.
Electricity
-Our claim is that our school still has problems with unnecessary electricity use and improper waste management, which can negatively affect the sustainability of our school environment.
- claim is that the relationship of saving electricity and reducing global warming and making our school more sustainable is that most of the electricity generated for our electronics are from burning oil, coal, fossil fuels, and natural gas.
- So by saving electricity, you are technically reducing the amount of energy needed for electronics to function which reduces the amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.
